Caring for the Child with a Life-Limiting Condition - various programmes
In 2007 an education programme Caring for the Child with a Life-limiting Condition was developed to raise awareness and understanding of the complex and ongoing needs of children with life-limiting conditions and their families. The need for substantial education and training for all health professionals was highlighted in the report “A Palliative Care Needs Assessment for Children” (Department of Health and Children and the Irish Hospice Foundation 2005). The programme is managed and co-ordinated by the Centre of Children’s Nurse Education in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin.
The education programme comprises of two levels - Level A and Level B.
Level A is a one day awareness programme for nurses / midwives who infrequently care for these children, and is run 6 times a year in various locations nationally.
Level B is a more in-depth programme for staff directly involved in caring for children with a life-limiting condition, and is run 4 times a year through the Centre of Children’s Nurse Education in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin.
Nurses from all divisions of the register are invited to participate in the programmes.
